Food glorious food!
I have been very, very fortunate to have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world including Noma in Copenhagen & Le Bernadin in New York. The whole experience is once in a lifetime, never to be forgotten, the food a taste sensation and in some cases a challenge for the tastebuds – potato in a dessert anyone??
I wouldn’t exactly say I had a love affair with food, my favourite meal of the day is breakfast, more specifically a thick wedge of sourdough toast slathered with ‘proper butter’ and topped with homemade marmalade. What’s not to like? And, of course served with fresh ground coffee………….. I can almost see one of my close friends shaking her head at me!
Influenced by Food TV?
Food is a staple in our lives and whether we choose toast, good home cooked food or a Michelin starred dining experience we all know what we like………..and don’t like.
I, like many people have become addicted to watching Masterchef (all of them), Great British Menu, GBBO (so emotional!) and most recently Creme de la Creme Bake Off (wow quite a challenge). At times, I am aware of being the ‘back street driver’ as I gasp at the latest pastry disaster, the raw offering or soggy bottom. I shake my head sagely at the TV saying things like, that’s not how it’s done, confident that I would never, ever put myself in the position of baking/cooking on TV. It’s so easy to sit and say I could do better………..
I have, however, thrown myself into the arena on a small scale. For those that know me, you will have probably done a taste test for me at some time, whether that was cake or jam. I’ve recently become the proud ‘owner’ of a 5* food hygiene rating which means I can sell my jams and cake………to the public! Eek!! Ok, so I’m not on TV, but still my jam & cake are out there.
How many recipe books is too many?
I may have one or two, mostly cake recipe books (ok make that a bookshelf full of them!) I just can’t stop looking for the next best………Victoria Sponge cake recipe or fruit combo for jam! And yes, I do have a book all about breakfast (The Breakfast Bible by Seb Emina & Malcom Eggs – yes really! Read a review here)
I am a subscriber to the BBC Good Food magazine, Baking Heaven, Cupcake Heaven & Cake Decorating Heaven, I need a new bookshelf just to accommodate my magazines. I just can’t bring myself to throwing any of them away! I can stand in WHSmiths or in a supermarket magazine aisle for half an hour or more……just in case I’ve missed something new! And I have found a new magazine, it’s called ‘The Simple Things‘ – I was attracted to the colander full of delicious looking strawberries on the cover and inside there is a recipe or two to try – chocolate honeycomb biscuit cake, lemon drizzle cake…. I’ll keep you posted on the taste testing!
Food Fayres & Markets
My latest, must do activity on my quest for inspiration is visiting local Food Fayres and markets. A trip to the market in Barnard Castle, Richmond or Northallerton is always a weekly occurrence – where better to get fresh fruit for my jams? I always need jam for Victoria Sponge cake. My first batch of raspberry jam this year is in jars, ready for labelling! The atmosphere of Food Fayres small & large always feels welcoming – the passion and dedication that the producers has for their products knows no bounds. And who can refuse the opportunity to try before you buy – always a winner!! Beats a trip to a supermarket hands down!
And so my quest for inspiration goes on, whether through visiting a restaurant or a market, reading a recipe book or a magazine………now, where did I put the July edition of BBC Good Food Magazine?
